Tbilisi State Medical University has always been in the forefront to address health related challenges of the 21st century. It  had realised the significance of educational reforms in the medical sector since its inception.  In November 1992, the Georgian government set up a much developed Tbilisi State Medical University upgrading the then existed Tbilisi State Medical Institute.

  TSMU which was originally established in 1918, became a full-fledged university by the year 1997 because of its implementation  of  outcome-oriented teaching methodology strategy.

 The strategy has been developed on the bases of European experts recommendations. The University is a member of the Association of Medical European Education, also a member of the   World Federation of Medical Education and a co-founder of the East-European Association of Medical Education. TSMU is not only the executor of legislative and recommendatory regulations of these International Organizations, but also participated in the recommendations systematization process. 

The university is one of the high-ranking state-supported institutions of higher education in the whole Caucasus region. There are over  5000 undergraduate and 203 postgraduate students at the University. Out of the total student strength, 20% come from foreign countries. Tbilisi State Medical University has undergone Institutional Evaluation Programme, performed by Association of European.
